Walking in Obedience

Date: November 25, 2025

Scripture Reading: 1 John 2:1-3

“My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. We know that we have come to know Him if we keep His commands.”

These verses reveal both the compassion and the calling of the Christian life. John writes to encourage believers not to sin — not out of legalism, but out of love. Yet he quickly reminds us of the hope we have when we fall: Jesus Christ is our advocate.

An advocate stands on your behalf, speaks for you, and defends you. Jesus doesn’t turn away when we stumble. Instead, He covers us with His righteousness and points us back to the Father. He is the atoning sacrifice not only for our sins, but for the sins of the entire world.

But John doesn’t stop there. He adds a clear marker of what it means to truly know Christ: we keep His commands.
Obedience is not about earning salvation — it’s the evidence of relationship. When we truly know Him, love Him, and walk with Him, our desire shifts from pleasing ourselves to honoring Him with our lives.

  • Grace covers us when we fall.
  • Love draws us to obey.
  • And obedience confirms our fellowship with Him.

Main Takeaways

  • Jesus is our advocate who stands before the Father on our behalf.
  • His sacrifice covers our sins completely — past, present, and future.
  • Obedience is evidence that we truly know Christ and walk with Him.
