Preaching Hope to Your Soul

Date: January 11, 2026

Scripture Reading: Psalm 42:5

Why, my soul, are you so dejected? Why are you in such turmoil? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him, my Savior and my God.

The psalmist does something deeply instructive in this verse. Instead of ignoring his discouragement or pretending it isn’t there, he confronts it honestly. He asks his own soul why it is downcast and disturbed. This is not doubt; it is awareness. Faith does not deny emotion, it directs it.

Rather than allowing his feelings to lead him, the psalmist speaks truth back to himself. He reminds his soul where hope truly belongs. Circumstances may shift, emotions may rise and fall, but God remains constant. Hope is not anchored in what is happening around him, but in who God is and what He has already proven faithful to do.

This passage shows us that spiritual maturity often involves learning how to talk to ourselves, not just listening to ourselves. When discouragement settles in, the answer is not silence or self-condemnation, but truth. The psalmist chooses to praise God not because everything feels resolved, but because he trusts that God is still worthy and still present.

This kind of hope is active. It does not wait for emotions to change before responding in faith. It chooses trust in the middle of heaviness, believing that praise will come again because God has not changed.

Main Takeaways

  • Faith acknowledges discouragement without surrendering to it.
  • Hope is strengthened when truth is spoken over emotion.
  • Praise flows from trust in God’s faithfulness, not perfect circumstances.

Cross-Referencing Scriptures

  • Lamentations 3:31-32: “For no one is cast off by the Lord forever…”
  • Psalm 62:5: “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone…”
  • Romans 15:13: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace…”

When your heart feels heavy, pause and speak truth to your soul. Redirect your hope toward God, trust His faithfulness, and choose to believe that praise will rise again as He continues to work in ways you cannot yet see.
